Eyes - Vision Surgery
By Jackson Djeison
Astigmatism is an optical defect whereby your vision is blurry because of the inability of the eye to bring an object into sharply focused image on the retina; irregular curvature of the cornea or lens causes this eyes vision problem. Astigmatic Keratotomy is a procedure that is performed to reduce the extent of astigmatism by reshaping your cornea from its original oval shape into a spherical shape. Anyone with a minimal or moderate degree of astigmatism who has had a stable prescription for a year at least and who does not have any serious vision problems can undergo this procedure to do away with the need for contacts or glasses.
INTACS is a procedure that is performed to reduce myopia and is an alternative to laser surgery. Tiny prescription inserts of plastic polymer are implanted in the outer edge of the cornea through surgery and they work by flattening the cornea to produce better focus and sharper vision. The advantages to this type of procedure are that the inserts can be removed; flexibility to make prescription changes when needed; no tissue removal and zero maintenance costs.
Lasik eye surgery has become over the years the most popular refractive laser surgery to correct eyes vision. A laser is used to change the cornea's shape to correct the refractive error and the advantage to this system of correcting nearsightedness or farsightedness, even astigmatism is a permanent procedure.
